Our team held an online workshop with filmmaker and media scholar Kevin B. Lee to discuss our work-in-progress desktop documentary, Piracy around the World. Kevin is widely recognized for his pioneering work in desktop documentary and online video essay. More about his work can be found on his website.

During the workshop, Kevin discussed with Kathleen, and Yining, Alejandra, and Tina about the current draft of the documentary. Drawing on his expertise in desktop documentary filmmaking, Kevin offered us insightful feedback on the possibilities of desktop documentary as a storytelling format. He emphasized the format’s ability to affectively evoke empathy while at the same time maintaining the authenticity of the research process. In addition, he encouraged us to think carefully about balancing an engaging narrative with the documentary’s evidentiary dimension.
